When the Cheer Stops

When the Cheers Stop™: More Than an Athlete

Helping Athletes Navigate Pressure, Identity, Mental Health & Purpose

Facilitator: Dejon Jernagin — Former Professional Athlete, Certified Speaker, Coach & Trainer

When the Cheers Stop™ is an interactive personal development and mental wellness workshop designed to help student-athletes understand who they are beyond their sport, performance, statistics, scholarships, and public recognition.

Athletes spend years being celebrated for what they can do. Their identity can easily become connected to playing time, rankings, scholarships, social media attention, wins, coaches’ approval, and the cheers of the crowd. But what happens when the season ends, an injury occurs, playing time decreases, a scholarship does not come, performance declines, or the game is suddenly taken away?

When the cheers stop, many athletes are forced to confront a difficult question:

“Who am I when I am no longer being celebrated for what I do?”

This workshop creates a safe, engaging, and practical environment where athletes can explore the emotional and psychological challenges that often accompany competition, expectations, transition, disappointment, and life beyond athletics.

Participants will learn how to separate their identity from their performance, recognize unhealthy pressure, develop emotional resilience, communicate when they are struggling, and build a greater sense of purpose outside of sports.

Drawing from Dejon Jernagin’s experiences as a former professional basketball player, mentor, coach, educator, and speaker, the workshop combines personal storytelling, group discussion, reflection exercises, practical strategies, and real-life conversations that athletes can immediately apply.

Key Topics

Participants will explore:

* Identity Beyond Athletics — Understanding that being an athlete is something you do, not everything you are.
* Performance Pressure — Managing expectations from coaches, parents, teammates, recruiters, social media, and yourself.
* Mental and Emotional Health — Recognizing stress, anxiety, isolation, depression, emotional exhaustion, and when to ask for help.
* The Need for Validation — Understanding how applause, attention, rankings, offers, followers, and recognition can affect self-worth.
* Handling Failure and Disappointment — Responding positively to losses, mistakes, injuries, rejection, reduced playing time, and unmet expectations.
* Transitioning Beyond the Game — Preparing emotionally and mentally for graduation, retirement, injury, transfer, career changes, or the end of competitive athletics.
* Building Resilience — Developing the mindset and habits necessary to recover from adversity.
* Purpose Beyond Performance — Helping athletes discover gifts, interests, values, relationships, education, career goals, leadership opportunities, and purpose beyond sports.
* Creating a Support System — Identifying trusted coaches, family members, mentors, counselors, teammates, and professionals who can provide support.
* Having the Courage to Speak — Teaching athletes that asking for help is a sign of awareness and strength, not weakness.

Learning Outcomes

By the conclusion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Identify the difference between personal identity and athletic performance.
2. Recognize common emotional and mental pressures experienced by athletes.
3. Identify personal triggers related to stress, disappointment, comparison, and validation.
4. Develop healthy strategies for responding to failure, adversity, injury, and transition.
5. Identify trusted individuals and resources they can turn to when experiencing emotional difficulty.
6. Create personal goals that extend beyond athletics.
7. Develop a healthier definition of success based on character, purpose, relationships, growth, and personal development.
8. Understand that their value does not disappear when the applause does.

The Three Stages

The workshop is built around three powerful stages:

THE CHEERS — Performance
Who are you when everyone is watching, celebrating, recruiting, praising, and expecting you to perform?

THE SILENCE — Transition
What happens emotionally when the attention changes, the crowd disappears, adversity comes, or your athletic journey takes an unexpected turn?

THE VOICE — Purpose
How do you rediscover your identity, confidence, direction, and purpose when sports can no longer be the only voice defining you?

The central message of When the Cheers Stop™ is simple:

“The cheers were never supposed to tell you who you are.”

Athletics can open incredible doors, create lifelong relationships, teach discipline, and provide unforgettable experiences. But every athlete deserves to know that their life, value, identity, and purpose are greater than the uniform they wear.
